The 4[+1] walled villa

The villa typology, in this region, is often defined by four enclosing walls with terraces on one side—boundaries that organize and contain space. Starting from this conventional model, we questioned its limitations and possibilities. Through exploration and precedents, we decided to add the [+1] wall—an element free of the traditional expectations of walls. Unlike the four enclosing walls, the +1 wall does not simply divide or contain; it disrupts, expands, and transforms the experience of the villa. It introduces a new spatial and perceptual logic, challenging the familiar while remaining legible to the user.

Maquette

The terraces on the side while connecting the villa to the +1 element, provoke interactions, offering elevated platforms that dissolve the villa’s inward focus and project its presence outward into the landscape. These outdoor spaces become transitional zones where boundaries soften, inviting contemplation, interaction, and an elevated perspective on the surrounding context.

Facade

The [+1] element, is not an act of excess but as an opportunity to redefine boundaries, framing the villa in ways that challenge interaction, perception, and function. This element (wall) became both an object and a device, a means of shifting spatial relationships and inviting occupants to rethink their experience of space. The mirrors in the [+1] element expand perceived space, enhance light distribution, or create unique sightlines that redefine how the villa engages with its users and its surroundings. The reflections create ever-changing 'ornaments' of the surrounding environment and the other walls.
